Mid Century Modern TV Console

My first foray into large cabinet making. It is just over 6' long which meant I had to do a lot of tool moving in my small basement shop in order to make the miter cuts. I came up with the design by searching Danish modern and mid century modern on the internet. In the end it was a combo of a Foureyes project mixed with a few styles I came across on pinterest. Since the drawers were going to be hidden by solid wood fronts I built them with pocket screws. When you build a project to a purpose it is a nice feeling when everything fits into it perfectly in the end. I am happy with the end result but hand planing and shaping the solid wood drawer front pulls was the highlight of the project for me.

I cut the miters by burying the blade on my table saw into a sacrificial fence. Worked great for the 6’ long pieces. Assembly was a breeze. I borrowed a friend’s domino. What a fantastic machine. Not heading into the cabinet business so I will stick to borrowing that very expensive tool.

It is made from maple veneer plywood with solid maple edging, solid maple drawer fronts, painted MDF sliders and was finished with super blonde shellac.

Nice work Jamie , I like your idea for the handles in the drawers . Turned out really well , something I need to make myself one day

Thanks Rick, but can't take credit for the drawer pulls. Some much smarter than me Danish woodworker came up with that one. I saw versions of it on several Danish modern cabinets.

Best part of making something for yourself is actually finishing it and the wife and/or family is happy with it too.

Nicely done!!

I love mid-century stuff (I'm early mid-century myself), and your cabinet captured the era perfectly. Nice job.

Holy cow, I'm having a flashback! That is a really nice piece of furniture. Well done. I have always appreciated a very light finish like that.

Nice project Jamie. You can definitely say you built this to store the Wii games.

Really well built and finished piece of furniture.
