Found a few more pieces in the cutoff bin and for lack of anything better to do I decided to build a miniature cutting board, aka a cheese board. Regrettably I did not have enough of the cherry to match both sides but then I’m not sure I could have pulled that off.
The finish was 2 coats of HD Butcher block oil followed by 2 of the HD mixed with bee and carnuba wax.
Very nice job Jon. I am trying to see if the whole board is end grain or partially.
I just received three boxes of hard wood cut offs that I ordered from both Amazon and from Ebay.
I am pleasantly surprised and the caliber of different woods that I received. Of the three different venders,
only one of them sent a couple of boards that have small bad spots on them. Nothing that I can't work around to make cutting boards.
As soon as it warms up a bit, I will get out to the shop and take some pictures of the wood I received.
The nearest shop with hard wood scraps in in Houston 55 miles away and rather high dollar.
I paid around 25 dollars for each box, which is a postal box and well filled with mixes of hard woods.
It might be a crap shoot when you order this way, but for 3 out of 3, I did pretty well.
I'll probably order more this way.
I want to make a 3D end grain board for my wife for Christmas. I'll post what comes out of this first attempt.
Theo says I have to post what ever I do no matter how it turns out. But then, how would he know. This is just between you and me.
again, that is a very pretty board Jon. What did you use for the feet on the back?
Good looking boards Jon. I have got to get into making a few of these. I had hoped to take a course on this at Woodcraft but it was a 2 day course with Alex Snodgrass but at $400 a person I really couldn't justify it. I've seen him at the trade show and he's impressive with his skills but $400 for a 3D breadboard would get me the dog house for a while. I'll stay at home and try to make something similar if I can......
Hi, Jon.
This kind of boards are calling my attention from a while back. I have been doing some small pieces using any kind of wood I have handy but I will do a big decoration job soon. I only hope to get the same result like you.
The board is entirely end grain. I built one face grain board but wasn’t pleased with the way it responded to cuts.
The feet are “Rubber Grippers” from ACE, part no. 5426150, attached with stainless steel screw.
I look forward to your comments on the boxes of wood you received as well
As photos of your work going forwards. @sreilly
Steve, i understand the concern about the cost of that program. As an alternative, Alex has a DVD for sale on the Carter web site for 19.95. I’ve found it informative though I have yet to build a 3D board. The glue up process on some of the “quilt” style board my wife designs re keeping me busy enough. @papasombre

Based on your posts to date I have no doubt your boards will be superb.
Very nice looking board with interesting patterns.
