Default A Cedar Sign

This was my first sign with this many letters.....126 characters including the 2 periods.

This was made for our best friends.....and she's more picky than my wife is. That means this board scared me more than any other board I've made! LOL

Cutting Cedar was like cutting butter.....to soft for me. That made it easier to make a mistake. I like cutting Oak better.

My next project will be 2 signs for a cancer fund raiser. Being from Texas, they will be TEXANS and COWBOYS themed. I'll post pics of them when done.

Wow that's one hell of a sign Frank . I would be nervous as hell towards the end praying that I didn't make an irreversible mistake and have to start over

Thanks for the compliments Rick and Graham.

I was scared the whole time I was cutting that I would make a mistake. My biggest fear was cutting the letters into the knot. In fact, I cut those first in case the knot blew out. I didn't want to have a lot of time into this and have that happen. Unfortunately, there were enough knots in the board to give it character and to make it tough to layout so many letters. I actually reworked the layout about 5 times in order to work around the knots as best I could. I changed font sizes, board sizes and layout design several times before settling on this one.

I must say I like the look of Cedar when finished so I will make some more signs with the wood. And I will probably learn to love the wood like everyone else does.

With my limited experience, I am still a big fan of Red Oak. I like the harder woods and it is readily available here on the Texas Gulf Coast.

Again, thanks for your compliments.

Ralph,

I have nearly 12 hours labor in cutting the letters and sanding the board. I had 5 coats of clear acrylic applied before 2 bugs got stuck on it. Had to buff it all down with 6-0 steel wool and reapply 3 more coats. That was frustrating!

Thanks.

Great job,Frank, I like it and can appreciate the time you spent on it to make it come out right. I presume this was all freehand, how did you transfer the letters to the wood?

Thanks Herb.
It was all free hand. I did a carbon paper transfer onto the wood. I use Inkscape for my drawings. I print them out using a PDF file set at 100% scale. If it's larger than 8-1/2 X 11 then i print out all copies required, cut and tape them together to make the full size drawing. Trace it and then cut.

If my drawing is 8-1/2 X 11 or smaller them I print the drawing in reverse and do a photo transfer on the board. The I cut out the drawing.

Thanks for asking and the compliment.
