Default Discarded slab end

Guy gave me this slab end earlier this year. He was going to throw it out. It's about 34 x 14 x 2". It's going to Raleigh, NC -- after I figure out what kind of finish to protect it with.

HJ

Any ideas?

John, I have become a big fan of Rustoleum 2X Clear Glossy. I use it on all of my boards.....oak, cedar, poplar, ash, pine, etc.

I did use Helmsman but the Rustoleum does a fantastic job and costs a lot less.

It's a beautiful piece of wood with perfect numbers. Are they CNC cut? They are so perfectly shaped. AWESOME!

Frank

I may not know what I'm doing, but I am having fun doing it wrong!!

Happy Day Veterans!!

Frank, the Helmsman is a polyurethane spar varnish designed for standing up to the elements. The sun kills all finishes over time.

Since it's sitting on the CNC bed, I don't think I'd fool anybody telling them how good I am at freehanding.

Does the Rustoleum 2X hold up good outside? I know Scottart uses spar varnish (Zinsser I think) up in Alaska. I'm just going to darken the numbers and leave it natural.

I don't even really know what kind of wood it even is. Just didn't want to see it go to waste.

Stopped by Benjamin Moore tonite for kitchen paint and on the clearance shelf was a gallon of BM Waterborne Urethane Industrial Use with UV absorbers, already thinned for spraying ........ for $5.

Guess what I'm gonna try.

BM Spar Varnish was $98 a gal.
