Default Member location

When the forums started there was a listing on each thread that showed the location of a member. This was an optional field, not required. I am aware that some forum members prefer to keep this info private for various reasons and fully agree they should be able to. I always had my location listed as Detroit, MI. so new members in my area could contact me. As a result several Detroit area members met for what we called: "Sawdust Saturdays." We worked on projects, tried out each others routers, attended Pen Turning for the Troops and a woodworking show as a group. We all had a great time, woodworking with friends is about as good as it gets. In an effort to assist new forum members I suggested that members list a state or provence along with their country so we could provide the best responses about where to go for service, parts or purchasing tools and supplies. Most members benefitted from this. Who wouldn't want to know where to find the best prices?

A couple of idiots ruined this for the rest of us. One female member was even harrassed for her address by a jerk. A simple message to any moderator would of cured this. The couple of incidents that occured caused Mark to remove the locations from the forums. This is a shame. I believe most people have enough sense to know this is not a dating service. I propose the locations be reinstated since the benefits are great and members have the option of not participating. The moderation team swiftly deals with any problems. Please sound off with your thoughts on this!

It's interesting to know where others call home. I'd like to know if anyone is close to me. I doubt it, though.

I'm all for restoring it. I realize that some people are paranoid about their locations being on the internet but, if it is an optional thing, I don't see why not. As you can see on my signature line that I am proud of where I am from and don't care who knows it. I guess if people want their location known they can do as I have and put it as part of your signature.

I vote for including locations again. At least the State.

It is voluntary...

I am with you on that one, Mike.

Knowing which state the members were from was a great help to me in getting to know the members and relating to their posts.....

For example, I have a couple of friends made on the forum I plan to visit next year

Now, if I could find one in Rapid City.......

As it stands now Country is a required field (on registration), from what I understand Mike your request is the addition of another field which allows for a more specific location?

This was something I have considered reimplementing in the past, ideally I would like for it to be a drop down selection, where the member could select his/her State/Province, which would be from a list generated based on the country selection. That way there is a searchable and standardized listing of locations which can be filtered. Otherwise we are left with an open input which means anyone can input anything (ex; Texas != TeXas). Although, as you can imagine this is quite a task. I would have to list all the States and Provinces for all the Countries in the world. I'm sure someone has done it before so I'll just have to do a bit of research, but I'm open to the idea. I'll watch this thread and see how it develops.
