Default ANNOUNCEMENT: Recent Members vs Last 24 Hours

On the front page of our site (near the bottom) we have a listing of currently active members and members who have visited during the last 24 hours.

The problem with having both listed is that it really starts slowing things down as we get more active.

Because of that, I need to remove the one for members who have been on the site in the last 24 hours.

Even without it though, you can still look back further than currently by simply clicking on the links for "Currently Active Woodworkers".

Thank you for understanding.

That really is a retrograde step, it's so useful to keep an eye on our regulars so that if they don't show for a while inquiries can be made, that's the kind of forum this has always been, it's like a club or a large family where we keep an eye on each other.

As I said, if you click that link you can still see further back.

Edit: Added Note:

Actually, I am wrong. It doesn't go further back but I can't put the 24 hours back because of the reasons I mentioned earlier.

If you want to check on someone, you will need to go to their profile to see when they were last online.

I'm sorry.

I am prepared to live with that, Cricket....

I always look to see those on last 24 hrs, but my machine is having trouble accessing the forum at the moment.

Anything to stop it getting slower.

I remember you mentioned this earlier and decided to give it a try....

On a similar topic, how important is "latest posts" to everyone, down at the bottom of the community?

It appears to be exactly the same as if we click on new posts at the top.

Just in case anyone was using that, you can find new posts at the top of the forum under the Forum Community tab.

Cricket...

Something that I never seem get right in the settings...

When I open a thread on oldest first I go to the beginning of the thread... this isn't so bad if theres only a few post but when there are several pages at 40 post per page...
you see where this is going...

if I set the settings to newest I go to the last post made... if there are any posts between the last one posted and the last one I read I often miss them...
to solve it the thread needs a rereading...

when I reply to a post instead of defaulting to the replied to post after submitting the reply I go to the end of the line...
while I was typing replies were made/posted I never see them unless I go look...

so.. is there way for me to fine tune my settings to go to the last post read and to default back to the post I replied to???

Sent you a PM...

I participate in about 4 woodworking and 6 Luthier forums and 99% of the time I only hit 'New Posts'. I rarely go to the Home page unless I've shut the browser down or restarted my computer. All of these forums are open in tabs, usually on the same browser window, with each on 'New Posts' and I hit 'New Posts' a couple of times each day to refresh, so I rarely see who's online.
