Default Controversial Off Topic Discussions: Feedback Requested

There has been a lot of discussion recently concerning controversial topics within our off topic lobby.

The moderation team and I would like to hear your thoughts on this.

We have some options here.
  • We could choose to limit our lobby to non controversial topics only. Unfortunately, this can make it tough to know where to draw the line because just about anything in the news these days can be considered controversial.
  • We could also simply say, no politics or religion.
  • Another option would be to create a private subforum off of the lobby that would keep those discussions in one place so we could choose if we wanted to participate in those discussions or not.

We would love your input on how you feel this should be handled.

If you prefer not to post your thoughts here in this thread, please feel free to PM (private message) me regarding your feelings concerning this topic.

I thought it said no politics or religion here already ? Most forums I'm aware of follow that protocol .
Just in case , maybe no more global warming threads either . Doesn't bother me but I have noticed it gets someone's blood pressure up a few points

I don’t always insulate , but when I do .
Ok ,I never insulate

I have seen all of the above options in the forums that I manage. It really comes down to what each individual community wants. Since we have seen an increase in controversial topics lately, it was time to talk to y'all and get your input so that we can adjust the rules as needed.

two other forums I'm on have a registered members only "Tavern" that require entry by request hotel California style.....
entry has a disclaimer that the moderators have final non-contestable say..
all house rules on conduct apply...
deliberate thread/member trashing or belligerent posting to get the thread closed down get the poster closed down instead... thread stays...
seems to work very well...

This would have been the week that I'd have finished chewing thru the restraints...

I'm tempted to go with Stick's comment, except that I know it'll turn into an argy-bargy...even this topic has that potential. (Witness the button thing).
I don't personally care if there's a 'Tavern' or not; I have the option of avoiding it.
...wait, what?! Me avoiding a tavern?

There are well moderated forums where people have informed debates over politics, religion, global warming, and other controversial topics. I remember someone in the global warming thread proudly declaring he makes up his mind then searches for information to support his position. That isn't being well informed and the ensuing discussion wasn't a debate but just bickering and preaching. I wont be participating in that and will simply ignore controversial threads.

Woodworking is a hobby for me, and fun (in a very sick sense of the word, to be sure). I'm in favor of friendly banter, but i don't want to spend my hobby time in conflict with my WW brothers and sisters. Shoot, if i wanted a controversial argument, i'd go to one of my family reunions!!

Thanks for asking Cricket.

...and Solomon said "Hand me that sword, will you"...

I suspect wherever you might allow "controversial" topics it will create same issue...it's just as easy to ignore a sub-forum as a thread.

Truth be known none of us are so left or right as to avoid the same topic the same way every time...or not.

We all have the choice to read and get involved in a thread or not no matter where it is.

I don't believe any of us can absolutely stick to such a black n white rule as "I'm never going to THAT sub forum ever"

It ain't broke don't fix it...or as has been said "if it ain't broke fix it til it is"

(Sorry for the ain't)

Just thinking out loud...

I agree with Rick, Global Warming, to me falls into the category of being political and is extremely divisive, that's the last thing we need on the forum in my opinion.
