Default Formica?

I'm a "newbie" getting ready to make his first router cabinet. I'm going to make the top from 3/4" MDF sandwiched. I'd like to laminate it with Formica, but can't seem to find any locally to me here near Atlanta. Lowes has 4'X8' sheets for $48, but that seems a little high to me.

Any suggestions?
Thanks
Bill

How about trying local cabinet making shops, you may even get a couple of offcuts, it doesn't matter if top and bottom are different colours!

I'm going to try that. Found some on Craigslist, but the seller has never responded to my email.
Thanks

If you buy the 4'x8' sheet from your local Lowes, you'll have material on-hand for your next table, too.

Hi Bill

Try Lowes/HD one more time, ask the guy in the back if they have some cut offs, they do the norm.. if not ask him to cut you off some, with a small cut off charge you will have what you want and you can pick it up and just put it in your kart....note sometimes they have a rack right next to the full 4' x 8' .....just need to root around just a little bit..

Note****if the guy in the back has some ask him to mark it down, he will just to move it out. the norm is about 6.oo to 10.oo bucks for a @ 24" x 36"

thanks Bob, I'll do that. Called a local cabinet maker, and he said he had some cut off he'd sell. Went, all he had was a 5' X 6' piece, and wanted $40 for it. For that price, I'm better off buying a whole sheet at HD/Lowes.

Hi Bill
I got mine at Lowes. It was damaged in 2 places & I got it for 1/2 price.
Check all the sheets, & just ask someone in the department for a discount if you find one damaged.

Life isn't right, wrong or fair. Life just is.

Default formica

hi bill,

i see youre in duluth. im from south georgia and the lowes and hd's around here sell no formica anymore. im not sure why not but they dont. i would think you could find some in atlanta. if i found it here i would buy the whole sheet and would use the leftover later on a jig or something. our local lowes only sells mdf in whole sheets (4x8) i drove 30 mile yesterday to pick up a piece of 3/4 mdf in a 2'x4' size. if i had more storage i would buy it bigger, but i dont.

Hey Levon,

Just a note....
I've noticed here in my area of NC that Lowes sells the full sheets only but Home Depot sells all sorts of the small sizes or stuff that was damaged and they just cut it up. Not sure why Lowes doesn't do this and Home depot does? yea... I know... too late to know this now huh?

lowes used to sell it and now since they sell prefinished countertops only they quit selling it and home depot here has followed their example. our lowes is awful and i have made numerous complaints about their services. the nearest hd is 30 miles away, but does try to be more accomodating. i realiize that in different places, people like lowes better.
