Default A Little Router Table Dust Collection Humor

First to the end of the story; the humorous part. Tonight, I turned on the router table motor without turning on the dust collector (donít freak, it was just a test). Anyhow, image my surprise when I did this and took notice immediately that the dust collector bag was inflating. What? I stared at it and within about 5 seconds it was nearly expanded to full size. Yeh, but the dust collector was is not on! I just started laughing.

Now for the boring part.

Today I installed an automatic iVac wireless control system for the dust collector. I put a sensor on the router cable so when the router turns on the dust collector will start running also. Installation was simple and worked great in my first evening of playing around. Got every bit of 40í when using the wireless HH remote too.

The humorous part occurred when I was done for the night and had switched the dust-collection controller off. Being that the iVac is wirelessly controlled, I did not want any spurious interference to turn on the DC when I was not in the shop. To confirm I had switch in correct position I turned on the router just to confirm that the DC would not turn on. Enter the beginning of this post.

OK, now why would I find this humorous. Maybe satisfying is a better word for it. Some of you may have read my thread on the new router table extension and dust collection box build. In the dust collection box build I was trying to make sure that I had good clean supply of fresh air intake for the router motor among other criteria. So, with the motor in routing position and with a liberal opening around the bit and with vent holes open in the front door of the box, the routers motors internal fan was still capable of pushing enough air through the motor and out of the box by way of the dust collector hose on its own to inflate the bag. Now, imagine what the good air flow through the motor and through the dust collection box when the dust collector is actually on. No overheating here.

OK, you smiled a bit, I know you did.

I know on a CNC machine a router can blow chip everywhere in your shop if you don't have a good dust boot.

Even if you don't have a fan-cooled router the chips can go everywhere. This is no dust shoe and a slice of Pecan, chips were all the way over at the window about 10' away!

Sorry, this was a bit off the thread topic. Yes, your story was humorous and glad your system works like you want.
