Jack - I'm also new to routing, I bought a Craftsman router and a benchtop table over 20 years ago and just used it for the first time recently. I immediately realized that I needed a newer better quality benchtop table. I probably considered the same tables as you have - started with the $100 ones (just toys), quality improved substantially at $200 - not ready to spend serious money yet. I'm undecided between the Kreg benchtop and the Bosch RA1181 - I have not seen the Bosch table. I've looked at the Kreg, my observations - the overall quality seems excellent, the table size acceptable and I really like the fence - But, it stands 16" tall - it would be too high for my workbenches and also it seems that as much expense went into the (very sturdy) base as went into the table & fence. Kreg displays the unit being used on the tailgate of a pickup truck (maybe that is why it's 16" tall), but for table that will mostly be clamped to a workbench it seems pricy. Regarding the Bosch, I noticed it includes many extras that are not included with the Kreg (on/off switch, feather boards etc) and it's priced a little less than the Kreg - So can it be of comparable quality? If not for the 16" height I would have already bought the Kreg.
Have you seen the Bosch table - any thoughts?
