Default Problem with Triton Router

I have one of the older large Triton routers (TRC001) which I use mostly in a table. The plunge mechanism on this router has been unusually stiff but workable. I've recently had it out of the table doing some plunge routing and today put it back in the table. I took out the spring before putting it in the table an after this could not raise the bit above table level to change bits. I can raise it just to the point where the loosening nut is just below the plate level. I've never had this problem before and just wondering if any of you Triton users has experienced a similar problem.

Notes: The router is supposed to be plugged in to raise above the table and automatically lock so I did have it plugged in when I ran into this problem. Also, the plunger rod is raised to the fully retracted position and locked so that is not the impediment.

Regards,
Roy

Hi Roy,

Do you have the power switch in the turned off? With my newer TRC-001, the switch has to be turned off in order to be placed in the above table bit change position.

I agree Mike.

I have an older TRA001 (the 240v model) and I have always had the unit unplugged when raising to change bits so it does NOT have to be plugged in to raise the collet up to change bits.

Roy, while you were using it hand held, did you make any adjustments to the plunge mode on the knob?

Or are you using an external switch and not allowing the switch cover plate on the router to close?

I've tried it both ways. Doesn't work either way. Now, I've taken it out of the table, put the spring back in and noticed the release to free plunge doesn't work either. I'm still working on the puzzle and because I don't use it a lot find it interesting just trying to figure out whats wrong.

James and Mike,
Thanks for helping me think. It was the plunge mechanism. Once I got it freed up, everything works. Its still a bit stiff and I'm thinking of a little graphite lube.
