Default New Member (Table Build Question)

My name is Dave and this is my first post. I have an unused laminate desk made out of particle board. I was going to disassemble the desk and reconstruct a router table out of it. I have limited space but would like the table to be larger than a standard router table top. This table would also be put on casters. I know that particle board can warp but it is fully laminated on all sides. I would reinforce the corners with pine or hard wood for strengh. Do i need a MDF top or will this work? I was hoping you guys had some router table build threads I can check out or share some new ideas about your homemade tables. All and any ideas would be helpful.

Thanks guys

Hi David. Welcome to our little corner of the 'net.

Check here: Wanted pictures of your router table for more tips and ideas on router tables than you probably want to know.

As for the particle board, no, not the best material for a router table. Much better to get a couple pieces of mdf and laminate them together, or some 3/4" baltic birch plywood.

Thanks for the advice. I was starting to wonder about the partical board. I was just looking at a some birch ply in a 2x4 sheet 3/4 thick. I was thinking that would give me enough make a table and use reamianing part of the sheet for the fence.

I made mine, about 43"x 24", out of a single layer of 5/8 melamine coated particle board and it works fine. However, I mounted it on a ladder style frame with crosspieces close to the insert cutout. Lots of material will make a top. Some materials have to be engineered a little better.

Someone I consider a master woodworker once told me that a master woodworker is not someone who never makes mistakes. He is someone who is able to cover them up so that no one can tell.

David, please note that 3/4" Baltic birch plywood has 13 layers while standard big box store plywood has only 7. The BB layers are thinner and there are no void spaces like you find in standard plywood. This makes for a big difference in strength.
