Default Incra upgrade question

I have a question on whether I should upgrade my Incra Ultra 18" to LS.

The Ultra is about ten years old. It has seen very limited use, but I am ramping up to get back into the shop. I want to work on boxes and other small projects.

I have a new Triton 3 1/4 HP router.

Is it worth it to upgrade to the LS? If yes, 17" or 25"?

Input happily received.

They both do the same thing, so why spend the bucks?

Steve:

The primary difference is the LS (Leading Screw) allows microsopic (1/64") fine-tuning for either advanced dovetail work or to micro-adjust a setting. I have the TS-LS with WonderFence setup. While I've use the leading-screw feature in situations where I've needed the micro-adjust, this hasn't been often-enough that I would justify the $180 that would be required to change-out the setup - this is my values stream speaking, and I can't make that comment from your perspective. Also, if I did advanced dovetails, I'd probably go with a Leigh jig, rather than use the Incra - I've been there, and it takes a lot of practice to get proficient with Incra dovetailing.
Regarding the LS17 vs LS25, there are two considerations - the LS25 is $30 more, from Amazon; and the Router Table itself has to be large enough to accommodate the extra spacing (assuming you don't build an aux table to support the Positioner base). From a purely practical view, I'm not sure the extra 8" capacity buys a lot.
I hope this helps.

Mike and Gary,

Thanks for the input. Your evaluations match mine, but I am so susceptibleto the "newest advance" argument, especially in something as specialized as the Incra Jigs.

Absent any further input I will probably pass.

As you know, the Ultra has the micro adjustment. You might want to upgrade the Ultra to the Wonder Fence. That is what i just did to my Ultra. Incra had a sale on the upgrade, but it ended 2/14/12.

Stuck:

Thanks for the correction - I was not aware the Ultra Fence had the micro-adjust; though, it is a different version than the typical LS.

Steve: if you have the Wonder Fence, then I think you have about as much capability as you'll need.

I teach the incra system locally and have clients who have the Ultra. To be honest it is more comfortable to use ( I can not explain it but when used side by side for the same task the ultra is often commented on as being easier to use). If you do upgrade i would be interested in buying your old one.

Thanks Craig. I think the question is now answered as I will stay with what I have. Where is "locally"? I am in Richmond, VA.
