This is just my way to track the progress on the type of project you all have seen probably hundreds of times ... making a router table with a built in lift.
The lift was made a while ago, before I decided to completely re-arrange my shop, so it was sitting in a corner on the original surface:
While moving things around, I came across parts of an old Ikea cabinet, one of which was this shelve. It is 38" x 22" x 3/4". It seemed like the perfect surface for my router table:
So I mounted my shop made lift on it. I installed it such that the bit is centered on the table. It seems like that is where most people place it, so there must be a good reason for putting it in the center.
Right now, it just has a 1" hole where the bit comes up, but that is not adequate for changing the bit. So the next thing is to cut out a place for an insert plate and make an insert plate for it. It needs about 4 1/2" for the bit holder to be accessable, so if I use a square piece of 1x5, it should be just big enough and be really easy to make more insert plates as the need arises.
