Default Table mounting

I have an older Craftsman Router (135.17381) which I want to mount in a table. I have a design I am seriously considering, but looking at the router manual, I noted that there is a caution about inverting the router (so the bit is up as in the typical table) while the router is running. The caution warns that sawdust can be sucked into the motor, causing damage. My questions are: 1. has anyone experienced such a problem?
2. Is there a way to shield the motor to prevent this? 3. Should I consider a table design where the router shaft is horizontal? 4. Is this just a hypothetical problem?
Thanks for any information.

If it says don't do it, you probably shouldn't. If you shield the motor you may overheat that way too with the same net result. Horizontal should be better though some dust might still get in. It is good to have one in the table and another for frehand. Have you considered getting another router just for the table?

Someone I consider a master woodworker once told me that a master woodworker is not someone who never makes mistakes. He is someone who is able to cover them up so that no one can tell.
