A New Deck Bench

Howdy guys and gals! Sorry I have been absent from the site for a while. I'm preparing to retire from my day job in December. I have been busy wrapping up projects and introducing my replacement to customers.

But I found a little time to get back in the shop and built my sister a bench for her new house and the deck they built. A new deck needs a new bench right? LOL

I carved the artwork into the bench top about 1/4" deep. Then I filled them with "Milliput" epoxy putty. (Gotta say I had a blast working with this stuff!) After 3 hours it is dried hard enough to sand smooth.....but I let it dry over night.

I stained the entire bench and then applied 3 coats of Helmsman exterior spar urethane. Simple bench with simple carvings.....but it was fun to make.

Here are a few pics.

Get limbered up now, lil buddy. You won't know when you ever had time to work.

Nice project.

I like it .. is it a bit wobbly being so narrow? Looks narrow.
Nice way to launch retirement.

Gus, it is 48" wide X 11-1/2" deep X 18" tall. The legs are made of 2X10 construction grade pine....rock solid. Cut the lengths of both legs at the same time....clamped together.... to make sure they were the exact same length. The seat is 1X12 select pine and the apron is 1X4 select pine. Can't remember the color of the stain.....so I'll call it the "75%-Off-Nonreturnable-All-Sales-Final-Brown-Stain" from Sherwin Williams. LOL Topped off with 3 coats of Helmsman exterior polyurethane.....lightly sanded with 400 grit between applications.
Nice way to launch retirement.
Thanks Tom. Looking forward to it......only 69 more working days.....but who's counting? LOL
Nice job! I like the art work on the bench. Warning: I retired in 2009 and can't figure out when I had time to work! Have a couple of hobbies and nine grandkids. Need I say any more? Be prepared to be busy.
