American Flag, Medicus

This was just a test piece to make sure my file on the CNC was correct, so I grabbed some 1/2" BB before running this on more expensive Maple. Now that I have cut and finished it I may not make another one, not sure yet. I'll give this one to a friend who's on the front line fighting the virus.

I don't think it's supposed to be barbed wire. It looks like the EKG readout to me.

This is a really great piece!

David that is a really nice looking.

If it were my project and I decided to cut another one I would re-size the caduceus to extend the bottom down into just below the next white strip. That would help showcase the caduceus. Of course, that is just my personal opinion.

I would also use 1/2" BB again because I really like the look you achieved.

Thanks, Mike! Is that what it's called? I read 'Medicus' on a couple of sites and it showed that symbol so I thought it was correct. Now I know in case I do another one. Medical guy I am NOT! LOL!

The file came from one of the CNC groups on FB if I recall and they guy who drew it asked that it be given away if you use his design. So I will honor that even if I modify it somewhat, and I agree with your assessment of the resize.

If I were to do another in BB I would actually cut a piece where the grain runs horizontal instead of vertical like this scrap piece. It does have a somewhat rustic look that I like. And it doesn't take very long; I started it at 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon and it was completely finished when Sandy got home at 4:45 - finish and all.

It's ok Herb. I probably should have known what it was but didn't want to call it 'that medical symbol thing'...

In reality the medical simbol is the Rod of Asclepius not the Caduceus.

The confusion starts with the use of Caduceus and Rod of Asclepius. The Caduceus is a symbol of Hermes or Mercury in Greek and Roman mythology. Caduceus symbol is identified with thieves, merchants, and messengers, and Mercury is said to be a patron of thieves and outlaws, not a desirable protector of physicians.[8] The symbol originated when Mercury once attempted to stop a fight between two snakes by throwing his rod at them, whereupon they twined themselves around the rod, and the symbol was born.[2,8,9] The Rod of Asclepius belongs to Aesculapius, who was the revered Greek God of healing.

Thanks! Just gave it to him. He is the manager at a clinic that has a drive-through service and was the first in our area to put that into place. The good thing about that is I can drive up, tell him it's in the back seat, and drive off -

Thanks for the explanation of the symbol, Joe. I'll stick to woodworking and leave the medical stuff to you pros and the great job y'all do!
