The lengths of the strings must represent different frequencies or wave lengths (swing rate) and how they go in and out of syncronization, forming patterns of movement, a visual representation of the effects of harmonic frequencies. Very neat. Love stuff like this.
Different lengths does mean different cycle length. I also think one of the other odd facts about a pendulum comes into play and that is no matter where you start a pendulum from, the cycle is the same. Obviously the velocity increases or decreases but the time for one cycle stays the same. So all the balls will line up when they hit on a common denominator for cycle time.
