Baskets / Boxes 2021 begin

Since Christmas 2020 I have made a few wooden baskets and boxes. I believe 5-baskets, 4-tea boxes (for tea bags) and 13 boxes. I have photos of 3-of the tea boxes. All will be gone this week - mostly to Down Syndrome Society.

The tea boxes displayed are made of quarter-sawn spalted red oak with a top made of bubinga, leopard wood with a top made of tiger maple and a box made of birdseye maple with a top made of padauk.

Another fine group of boxes. My first time seeing quarter sawn spalted red oak.

Still haven't done boxes like these....or any other style yet. Really need to get to trying. I've got 3 granddaughters that would love these.

I told my daughter if she wanted something made of wood I'd make it, BUT if her daughter wanted anything I'd make her 10. My daughter said she knew that.

When I purchased the quarter-sawn, spalted red oak the fellow said he only see that about once every 10 years. I bought all that he had - about 100 bf. That is the last of the purchase. I have made a couple funeral urns out of it and some boxes.

Some nights I get up around 4 a.m. to work some in the shop - sanding some boxes or applying finish. I'll work in the shop until 5 p.m. or so. I'll put a coat on items around 7 p.m. Then before going to bed around 10, I'll turn some of the pieces over and put a coat on that side of the board. I generally have 6 to 10 boxes or baskets in the assembly line. Most of the time is taken up with applying the finish. It only takes an hour or so to cut out a box or basket. I got down pretty good. I don't want any item leaving the shop with a flaw even though most of my pieces go to little kids.

Great boxes, great that the do some good as well. Must feel great to hand them over. Do some go for fundraising as well?

I love rough carpentry ( not saying yours is, of course),

Finishing has always been my bug bear.

As far as fundraising, two of the three Down Syndrome Society that I send my items to said they use some of them for fundraising. Anything to help them.
