Hey Everyone -

I really did this backwards by starting a question thread first, so I thought I'd set things right by doing an into. My name's Bruce and I live in the foothills east of Sacramento California, what's generally called the Gold Country.

I'm a retired network architect, but I've always built things, typically related to music and audio; speaker cabinets in high school and college, stereo stands and cabinets later in life, and the typical outdoor deck. I've also built electronic projects starting with a Dynaco amplifier in high school; I still geek out a with two channel audio, home theatre, home automation, and guitar.

I actually majored in technical theatre, specializing in lighting and sound design, and worked for several years as a theatre technician in a community college where I ran the theatre, scene shop, and taught the lab portions of the stagecraft, lighting and other tech classes.

My most ambitious project to date was designing and building our current home; while I did the actual design, my wife and I were the general contractor for an owner/builder construction and we subbed out most of the trades. We were also the electrical sub and did the finish carpentry, as well as fixing things where the other subs ... fell short ... and we're still married!

Now I spend my winters skiing as a Mountain Host at Park City Mountain, and my summers enjoying the Gold Country, traveling, and working on projects. My current project is yet another equipment cabinet (a credenza) to replace built-ins I designed for the home, but which have been too massive and cumbersome for my tinkering nature. While this project isn't as ambitious as a house, the detail requires more precision and it will be a (fun) challenge for me.

So that's it, thanks for the welcome and help some have given in my other thread; I hope to get to know this place and you a little better, learn some things, and share what I'm doing.

Which brings me to a question, what part of the forum is the right place to share current projects and ask questions along the way? I'd like to just have a single thread to update; in looking around it seemed "Project Plans and How To" might be the right place, but wanted to ask?

Welcome to the forum Bruce . I share some of your passion for music , and love my home theatre system .
I needed an intermediate sized pair of speakers for my gym , and everyone at a Home Theatre forum was so against it .
I'm sure I could have bought some quality raw drivers and X-overs , and came up with something that would have been a better option than what I settled for , as Thiele/Small parameters are no big secret now. But it's too late as apparently I'm going with inwall speakers now (gag) .

Looking very forward to seeing your projects
Now if the industry would just get there butts in gear and offer an electroluminescent quantem dot flat panel .
Heard 2019 possibly , but then I have to wait another three years for the costs to come down .
How I wish they would have retooled the Plasma flat panels to do 4K , as they'de still be around
Hello and welcome to the router fotum, Bruce :)

Welcome, Bruce, from another retiree and newcomer around here. I too get a bit confused navigating around these pages, but I think it's just because there is so much good stuff around. No doubt landmarks will become familiar over time. All the best, Norm

Welcome Bruce. i think you're going to like it here. We love to help each other with ideas when starting new projects, or when one of us has a problem and posts it, he sometimes gets fifty ways of solving it. We love to help each other or show pictures of our latest projects. There is a huge amount of woodworking talent here and many have experience in subjects far beyond woodworking. You should fit right in.

Hey guys, we now have a real network engineer among us, someone to answer those non woodworking router questions that people keep bringing here.

Bruce, I hope you don't mind, but every once in a while somebody joins this forum without investigating enough, and they think we specialize in network routers instead of woodworking routers. Your help on these occasions will be greatly appreciated.

Charley

Not sure why anyone would be against speakers in your gym, or even strongly opinionated about it, if you enjoy the music and you get a good workout that's what's important.

Yeah, cost is the issue with getting most new techs adopted, for me now it's what meets my needs, and size matters. I'll give up perfect blacks for an 80" 4K with HDR/WCG for under $4K. Plasma uses too much power for me, but they look beautiful, OLED's still too pricey for an 80" - but getting there.

Thanks Rainman, should have my project posting soon.

Thanks Charley, I'll give the same advice I use when having trouble with a network router ... increase the RPM!

Probably just Deer Valley (which is in Park City), I know the lift ops manger at PCMR and he's about my age (and they have separate owners). We do get some passes at DV too though so I'll look him up!
Welcome to the forum !!

Ditto!
There is an alternative, you could photograph each operation and present the thread as a pdf, like this:
