I was just watching TRW on TWC and heard one of them say: "always use a fence rather than a bearing on a strait piece of wood". I'm curious why this is the case? Does anyone know?

The nearing will follow any imperfections in a "straight" board. The fence will even pot those imperfections and make the workpiece straighter.
It is much like a jointer in this respect.

That makes sense. One quick follow-up. When I adjust the fence by holding a straight edge up against it, should the bear just turn or just be too far back to turn? I'm assuming it should be a hair behind the fence thus not turn...
