I am looking at the Steel City Bench top Planers 40200H and 40300H. Both have helical head cutters and are 13" wide format. Can anyone tell me the differences and make a suggestion. I am brand new to woodworking and am setting up a small shop. Thanks.

I was just reading a review of the Steel City's the other day (sorry don't remember where), but if I'm correct, the cutters are high speed steel and not carbide. I would guess you might be turning cutters more often than if they were carbine.

There was another article in a magazine I had that did a shootout of replacement helical cutter heads for popular bench top planers. I believe these are carbide. The consensus was they are worth the expense. It might have been Fine Woodworking Magazine.

If I were going to get another bench top planer I probably go the replacement route with carbide... or wait until someone actually ships one with carbide.

At any rate, I have a DeWalt 13" planer that refuses to die, despite the abuse I give it. Only DeWalt tool in the shop.

I noticed this post is a little old, but since it is still active I thought I would try to add an attachment I got from a Steel City tech when I asked this same question. The rpm specs seem a little confused between the product info and the manuals. It is not clear whether they are for the motor or the cutter head.

I haven't decided on one yet. There are only seven customer reviews for the 40200H, and three for the 40300H on Amazon. The reviews are good for both, but several people note some tear out on hardwoods using the 400200H. This is not mentioned as a problem for the 400300H, but again, it only has three reviews.
