Excellent and very clever solution. I have replaced all my worklights with LEDs. They are available in many sizes, but the one I like best is the small reflector spotlight. Here's a pix on my bandsaw, but if you look around, you will find lots of small LEDs that you can attach to a machine. I would even consider wiring it direct into the power cord, or running a separate power cord, taped to the tool's power cord. For freehand routing I prefer to have the cord hanging from the overhead so it stays out of the way.
