Bringing in the new year RIGHT!

Y’all remember the table and stools I built a little over a year ago? The stools being almost 24” tall have proved to be too tall to sit on and put on and off our shoes. We love the table set, its been great, but the shoe problem has been a problem for far too long.

So today I built the bench I’ve been wanting for months. It was made on the same design as the stools to become part of the set, but its height was made at a standard chair height of 17-1/2” so I can finally have a place to sit and tie my shoes, because tryna balance on top of tall stools while bending over or lifting one leg is just too hard on a fat boy! I added a shelf about midway up from the floor below the seat so we can store shoes on it and below it. It will be finished to match the stools soon.

This took about 5 hours from start to finish. Cost was $34 for two 2x6x10’s, three 1x4x4’s (ripped into 1x3’s for the shelf), a package of 2-1/2” pocket screws, bolts, washers and nuts for fastening the legs on, and some wooden button plugs to cover them once the finish is applied.

Herb, that is just basic dimensional lumber from Lowe’s. Probably white pine. They’re plain Jane 2x6x10 boards, $6.30 each. I did go through the stack quite a bit to find several boards with minimal knots and fairly straight. The knots it does have are very small, like pencil eraser sized. There was one or two the size of a dime I couldn’t avoid but they’re strategically hidden in the build, and for the most part I cut around others I didn’t want in it.

Style and function makes it look like it belongs there. Excellent design, actually like it better than the 1st, and very sturdy. Very nice job Duane. Thanks for sharing.

Looks nice and should work well for tieing your shoes. Next project should be a footstool to match that is lower than the bench to raise your foot up so you can reach your foot easier.
