Well, I knew I couldn't handle all that router noise for long but it would get me cutting sooner so I put the DeWalt 618 on there and made due for a couple of months. Then I Finally saved up enough to get the Chinese 2.2kw water cooled spindle and HY vfd. It made some high pitched whistle noises but overall it was great! For $315 I could finally stay in the shop and even talk on the phone while it was working away! I posted a video to show David my new flow indicator in action.
The first comments were about the noise and it should be quieter..... so I contacted the seller on eBay and told them about this noise. Their english is a little hard to understand but they explained the whistle is from an air gap that sometimes occurs if the factory doesn't get the bearings seated properly but it wouldn't affect the life of the spindle. They were so great and immediately sent me a replacement and told me to just keep the other one so I'll have a spare if one breaks.
So now I have a new "Quiet Spindle" and a spare whistle. 🙂

They were only out $1.98, but that is a weeks wages for the factory machinist that assembled it, and had it deducted from his paycheck.

That's far better than I expected on the replacement, Joe. You can actually take these apart and replace the bearings so I would imagine you could take it apart and make sure the bearings are seated properly w/o having to replace them.

PS - I'm still thinking about that flow indicator. For the first time in over a year of running my pump didn't start like it was supposed to. Fortunately I always check the water flow back into the tank and caught it within about 10 seconds. I remembered bumping into the control panel earlier but didn't realize I had accidentally switched off the water pump - oops!

My Chinese spindle had quite a high pitched noise when I first got it running. I contacted the seller and he told me that it will quiet down with some run time. I ran a 12 hour 3D carve and sure enough, it runs much quieter now. Now that I've got all the bugs worked out I'm very happy with my 2.2kw air cooled spindle.

Does your software turn the spindle on-off and set spindle speed? Mine does but I still need to push the Start button before I run my first cut file.

Yes, I've got it all automated with the post processor. The Spindle, water pump, and flow indicator lights turn on when you run the gcode and off when it's finished. Speed is controlled by the tool database in Aspire.
I do have a 220v power switch beside my controller to power the vfd. It's protected so I can't accidentally bump into it like David. 😉

Nice catch David but it was close. You might build a little guard for that switch.

I honestly didn't think I would ever hit the switch, at least not just right to switch it off. It's a 3-position switch with left on Auto, center is Off, and right is Manual. On occasion I will switch it to manual and let the pump run a bit longer but that's pretty rare.

What surprises me is that I hit it with my knee and didn't hit the much larger and more protruding big red Off button. I'll bet I can't do that again!

It has to be due to your skinny knees David!!! 😉
That's a great custom enclosure. I followed this video and automated mine with the post processor. If I need to turn anything on or off manually, I use m7, m8, and m9 commands in mach3.
I'm using a cncrouterparts controller but anyone using Vectric software should be able to use this technique for their hardware.
