Craftsman Router Stuck in First Gear

I have a Craftsman router that is less than 10 years old. It came as a combo kit with a fixed and plunge base. It has variable speed. No matter what speed I adjust it to, it turns slowly - very slowly, not even 20 rpm. Any suggestions? I appreciate any help. Thanks.

Hi, welcome. Sounds like the speed controller has failed. Craftsman is notorious for not having parts available, but check to see if you have a tool repair shop nearby and let them look at it.

I don't feel comfortable taking tools apart, but you can always check ereplacementparts.com to see if they have this electronic part available, in which case with great care, you might be able to replace the circuit yourself, Good luck with it, many craftsman tools quickly wind up in a recycle bin.

Thanks so much!
Welcome to the forum, @darren0808stevens .
If it is only 10 yrs old, there should be parts available (depending on the model?).

I replaced the speed control on my 15yr old Triton, no worries.

1. Have you replaced the Carbon Brushes yet?
2. If you have, open up and bypass the speed controller and see if it can run at full speed.
3. If Router can run at full speed when speed contoller is bypassed, you can replace the OEM speed controller from a Spare Parts Store or use a cheaper extenal Router Speed Controller. see attached

you’ll have to decide if the router is worth a service call. Sometimes it’s just cheaper and less stressful to purchase another router.
