As a rule "craftwood" is basswood, very light weight and fine for what you are doing. Make sure you use an oil finish that is food rated such as salad bowl oil at Rockler.

Shellack on M & M candies? Whoa, I never heard of that.jerrymayfield said:Any of the readily available finishes are food safe when fully cured. The salad bowl finish sold under that name by General Finishes is exactly their same formula for Danish Oil; i.e.
varnish,linseed oil and mineral spirits, check the msds on their site. How about shellack it is, or maybe was, the coating used on M & M candies.
