Dewalt 618 Issue

I'm not sure where to put this thread since none of the major topic areas really fit so I figure this is the best place to start. So, I was using my 618 in my table the other day and had the speed setting on 5. about mid-way through the piece I was routing, I heard a pop from the router and the router speed control no longer worked and all I can get now is top speed.

I opened the moter and found what is identified in a parts list as the Magnet Ring was cracked and broken into 4 pieces. Now, I don't know if this is the problem but it's the only thing I can identify in there as being out of whack in any way. Now, my question is, how do I get the bearing that rides above the magnet ring off so I can slide on a new magnet ring? Also, would the broken magnet ring be the ultimate culprit of the speed control issue?

I think you are looking at the wrong part for the problem. What you should be looking for is a speed control module. Here is the information for it from where I buy my parts.

Module [397454-03] - $34.03 at eReplacementParts.com
