hi everybody. I need some help, I hope someone can help me, I bought a dewalt router Dw 618. I haven't used it yet at the workshop but before cutting wood I decided to make a test so I ran the router with no bit installed and I let it go for about 5 minutes after this short time the motor and collet were too hot. I mean too hot to touch, is not the normal warm. I made the test with three different routers that I own, ryobi and makita and they get the normal warm but not to burn you. the dewalt does not smell like burn and works good. but I think that if used .it will burn. my question is; when you router was new, does anyone had the same trouble of hot motor and collet, how do you solved it? or do you think after several uses the burn issues will dissapear? help please, recomendattions before take it to tech support, cause I wouldn't like an open surgery on a brand new tool

You may as well call Customer Support as they will need to tell you what to do and have the warranty on the router. If not sure about using it don't, just call and explain the problem. Friction causes heat and while a motor will get warm it and its connected parts should unless you've caused it to come in contact with a friction source....bit and wood.................

I have three of those DW618 routers, and none of them have ever been that hot, even when doing some pretty heavy work like panel raising, where I should have been using a 3+ hp router, but didn't have one of those with me. I worked it hard, but knew that I had to be careful. It got very warm, but not beyond where I could hang onto any part of it.

Check if the vent holes or fan are clogged up/obstructed? You'd probably hear a bad bearing.

I would also suggest that you don't tighten a collet without a bit and I wouldn't run a router with a loose collet.

I’ve noticed several times that the tone changes and I believe the speed is changing too. Today It made a horrible noise and the speed was changing so I went to adjust to a lower speed. The speed dial would barely turn, motor was hot, and when I started it up it went to full speed and stayed there regardless of settings. I’ve heard several complaints now of users that say it causes problems when used in a router table. The bearings are probably underrated and the dust causes problems. I find that the motor runs fairly hot and also that the collet area is fairly hot without a lot of use. I guess this is going back for repair under warranty. I am truly disappointed in this unit

I'm not sure about the speed controller on the 618. I know they were faulty on the 625.

Welcome to the forum.

I've had two 618 and one 616 for several years, they have all been completely reliable. Sounds like you got a lemon, even Boeing makes a lemon sometimes. I would much prefer it be replaced under warranty instead of fixed.

Welcome to the forum, Jake. Most brands produce a lemon, some rarely. I would send it back for a waranty check.

My wife and I are new here as well.
Thanks for posting about the router experience you had with the Dewalt, seems rebelwork has same issues with them as well.
I will certainly look into another brand once I get around to making a router table to mount a bigger router into.

My issues are with older routers. I'm not sure if it was ever corrected. I may replace with the same speed controller as in the past or if it was corrected and is a new speed controller. Dewalt makes good products and as many have said it might just be a bad router. I have a DW618 under the tablesaw extension without a glitch. The 618 runs off and on were the 625 ran for long periods of time which may have had an effect on the speed controller from heat build up.
