Dovetail jigs without Dust collection are a mess and for many lead to one of the reasons to stop using it. For the Porter Cable 4200 Jigs, Leigh makes their LEIGH VRS1200 VACUUM AND ROUTER ATTACHMENT https://woodworker.com/fullpres.asp?PARTNUM=176-609 and can be in your shop for the total of $84. It looks and works great, check out their video.

Now if you have PC jig or any Dovetail jig that has bracket legs on their template you can make your own for the price of scrap wood and $8 of hardware. Here is the jig, it connects to the same bolt that the template attaches to. It picks up about 95% of the debris.

Jig Size

The Bottom of the jig is 14 1/16" long- 5 3/8" deep- it is cut at a 30 degree angle with a 3/4" 90 degree piece at its 2 wide end sides. It is cut from a 1/2" piece of plywood

The top is 13 3/8" long and 4 1/4" deep cut a t 30 degrees it is cut from a piece of 3/4" Plywood. Cut an extra top using 1/4" luan for different thickness.

The sides and back are 1x2's cut at 30 degrees. Covering the 1x2's sides are luan pieces used to snug the jig to the brackets and bolts.

The design was limited to the available hardware. Fortunately I was able to make things work from what I could get from my local hardware store.

The L brackets had to be bored out to larger than 3/8", the size of the bolt that holds the template and now Dust Collection Jig. They also needed to be bent to 30 degrees or the angle from the jig to the bolt. When I did that there was a gap on each side. That's when the additional luan side pieces were added.

To hold the Template in place I used 3/8" x 1" T-Nuts and 2 3/8" by 1" washers. The Porter Cable knobs are now used to hold the Dust Collection Jig in place. A standard Shop Vac 2 1/2" to 1 1/2" reducer was used and inserted in to a drilled hole saw hole (1 1/8" ?)

The Design is based on William M. Porters design https://www.portercalls.com/napkin_holder.htm

Good job, Jim, You are right about a mess if you don't use one, that is one reason I stopped using dovetail jigs. Thanks for posting the details of how you built it.

I have a Rockler jig that has a dust collection attachment. I switched to a different kind of jig and would dearly love to sell the Rockler jig. PM if interested, it will be a nice price plus shipping. Just hate to see a new tool sitting unused on a shelf.

Jim that's a good solution to get rid of most of the dust when using the dovetail jig. I think I'll have to bookmark this post.
