Elu Mof98

Hi guys,
Just started getting into woodworking at the grand old age of 48. Joined the local college and i'm doing a 2 year level 2 furniture course and loving it.
Went to the local auctions last night and bagged myself an ELU Router Mof 98..
Question is how do i change the bits? no sign of a spindle lock on it and only one spanner came with it.
Hope someone here can help...
Many thanks
Harv

Hi Harv and welcome. If it was meant for 2 spanners then there will be flats on both the collet nut and the armature shaft just below it. I’ve never heard of anyone on this side of the pond owning one. They were supposed to be a very good router and although old there are quite a few still in service.
Welcome, glad you decided to join the fun. I've attached a pdf of the 17 things that helped accelerate my learning curve. It covers a lot of ground. And another contributor, Stick, should connect you to some very detailed pdfs on router use.

Good idea to take a course. Should make learning easier. We enjoy posts with pictures of projects, so as you make things, take pictures. You can upload pictures from your own computer right away and after 10 posts, you can post links.

Hi Harv,

firstly, welcome to the forum.

I found the manual for the ELU 96 in the forum library....#7 is pressed to lock the spindle.. May be the same for yours?

Thanks for the reply's guys... Very helpful..
Cherryville... im actually in the UK so their not so rare here. lol, sorry forgot to set my region before.
DesertRatTom... Thanks for the guide, very useful to me as i start to think of beginner projects for my shed.
JW2170... i found this file only already and NO it doesn't seem to have a spindle lock like the 96.... but i think Chuck was right with the 2 spanner option. not just need a spanner i havent got .. hahaha

Just converted my little 6x4 concrete shed into a bigger 16x4 workshop... No electric as yet but will have in the future when i can afford it..
Build my 1st workbench, at college. Teachers were awesome and let me take time off my Cabinet build to use the machines and converted 50 year old stud timbers into usable timber.. (Wood came from a friend who demolished the local Police Station to develop into flat and gave me all the usable 4x2's he'd ripped out. Then at college i jointed and thicknessed them, tenoned and mortised and glued and clamped the hell out of it.)
Also had a go at french Cleats using various timber i had lying around...

Looks like you have a great start. Bench looks solid as well.
There’s nothing special about router collet wrenches/spanners other than they are cheaply made and straight, not angled like standard spanners. It will be a metric size and the only issue might be how thick it needs to be. If a standard spanners is too thick they can be ground down or if you can find them tappet style wrenches are thinner than standard ones.
All sorted. Quick trip to my local market where there's a guy who sell all kinds of 2nd hand tools... Got me 2 spanners for just £1...
Got the collet nut of but the actual collet was proving difficult to remove with the router bit in..... a little bit of mallet persuasion managed to get it out...

Welcome Harv,

In the shop photos I saw some nice hand planes and some Japanese saws, I use a Dozuki almost every time I cut wood manually, I just enjoy using it and I recommend it to my students.

Cheers,

Dan
Thanks Danman,
Yeah i have got a couple of planes now....

Axminster Rider No. 7
Axminster Rider No. 62 Low Angle
Axminster Rider 2 in 1 plane
(These 3 factory Seconds but in perfect condition!!)

Also got a Stanley Bailey No.4 and 5 1/2
and a Stanley Block Plane

Love the japanese saws, dont seem to get on with the Western Saws as much

Maybe the 98 is different but generally when releasing the collet with the wrench it will only go so far and then seem to tighten again. You need to continue loosening that second time and the collet will then release the bit. Mallet should not be necessary...
