Elu OF 97 / DW 621 fan & disassembly problem

Hey y'all,

I'm having a bit of a problem with my OF97. It is one of those grey & blue, Italian-made Elu routers, which then became the DeWalt DW621 (I just realized the header on this board is the very machine I am talking about - look up and right!)

It started making noises when running, and I thought the bearings were shot, but upon superficial examination (opening the top, unscrewing the brushes) it seems to be that the cooling fan at the bottom of the shaft somehow detached and is rubbing against the bottom of the casing, causing said noise. I looked it up and it seems this happened to at least another guy on the internet - Dewalt DW 621 questions - Canadian Woodworking and Home Improvement Forum

I would like to gain access to the motor, but it turns out to be more complicated than I thought. I'd rather keep the top together and remove the motor from the bottom, but to do so I need to unscrew this locking ring:


I have the right spanner, but the dang thing won't budge. I am wondering whether it could be reverse-threaded. I tried both direction, no avail. Am I doing something wrong?

Thank you guys for your replies. As it turns out, I never managed to unscrew the damn thing, but I ran the router upside down (sans nut and collet) and shook it around as it was running and it seemed to do the trick - no more noise / rubbing. I can't quite believe that this'll be a permanent fix but it allowed me to finish the job!
A friend of mine owns the same router and faces the same problem, I might take both our routers to a mechanic's shop.

Those holes are not threaded, they are clearly mean to be used with a spanner, but there might be Locktite in there and I reckon a mechanic would have tooling with more torque than I do!
