Feeling Groovy

I thought the 50th Anniversary of Woodstock deserved some commemoration, and I wanted to try something different. This sign is made of three glued-up layers: the base shape, the face and text-shadow, and the glasses and text. The face is MDF, and the rest is baltic birch ply. The video shows how it was done.

Nope. I was attending a happening about 9,000 miles further east. Ours was a rather rowdy party.

Very cool, Oliver! About 400,000 people attended the blessed event on Yasgur's farm in 1969 but today you can find a couple of million who say they were there! LOL!

The film, split screens, rowdy images, is the closest I got. Recently learned the featured musician, Jimmi Hendrix famous "Star Spangled Banner" was one of the very last acts, and only about a third of fans were still there. Split screen became popular for awhile after the Woodstock movie came out. A friend of mine at UCLA film school used it for his final project, "Icarus Wish." I can't believe it, it's on YouTube!

I didn't go, but I can remember the traffic snarls after it ended. Many of the attendees to Woodstock were from NY City, and had to cross the Hudson River somewhere along it to get home. Interstate 84 was fairly new at the time, many chose it for their return route rather than continue South to other bridges closer to the City. But in their infinite wisdom (NY State Politics) they had decided that this new 4 lane interstate highway only needed to have a 2 lane bridge across the Hudson and toll booths for both directions on the East end of it.

When the festival ended, the Woodstock attendees in their cars, vans, and buses were backed up with waits so long that people were camping on the sides of the interstate. It took several days before the traffic across the bridge was back to normal, and a week later before the mess from the campers was all cleaned up.. It wasn't long after the Woodstock Festival that the State began planning for a second parallel bridge, and widening/rebuilding of the first bridge to handle the I-84 interstate traffic load. They still have their toll booths, but now only collect tolls in the West bound direction. You can now cross going East bound for free (maybe this is an incentive to convince New Englanders to migrate West?). When I moved to NC it felt good to get away from NY and their tolls by going across this bridge for free. It was a short enjoyment though, because I keep going back for visits, and they get me for the tolls every trip.

Used to live in Orange County, CA, where the voters approved a series of toll roads. Promised tolls of 50 cents. Today, the tolls are $5. Not only that, but there are only a few routes out of the Los Angeles basin, and one of the hidden items in the vote was that the state couldn't expand the public highway where the toll road joined it. So there have been 30 years of traffic jams. There's a toll road in the plans for the desert, but I don't think the private financing isn't happening. The Orange County Toll Roads isn't making money. Westerners aren't used to paying tolls and do our best to snub them.
Het Charley, I would check my compass if I were you. I use that bridge 5 days a week, and I pay the toll east bound...headed toward Connecticut.

I HATE that bridge.
