Hello all

First tentative steps into the world of routing. Just purchased my very first used router off ebay - a Makita RP2301fcx. The intention is to diy some kitchen worktops using a Trend jig.

Whilst getting familiar with my router I noticed that the accompanying 30mm guide bush has some slight play in its housing - approx 1 mm or so. I've been reading that when using jigs for worktop joints, accuracy is especially critical and am now worried that the mm or so play will cause unsightly joints on the worktop. Is this play/movement common or could it be that my bush is worn/damaged and needs replacing? Is a mm play disastrous for my intended first use? There is no way of tightening the bush as it just slots into place through some spring locking mechanism.

A further question I'd like to ask is whether there is any way I could ensure any bushes I fit will have the cutting bit centred inside. Unlike other routers, there does not seem to be any method to adjust the base plate supplied that I am aware of. Would I need to purchase a separate plate and bush to be able to use a centering pin I see some using for other brands in youtube videos? I do not have the tools to manufacture one for myself as expertly as some of you have.

I did try to search for bush movements but wasn't able to come with anything. I would very much appreciate any advice/direction given. Based in the UK.

Kind regards
D

G'day @dink22 , welcome to the forum.

My 2 Makita routers have a differnt guide bush attachment system?

So cannot help there.

There is no movement with these guide bushes.
IMO, It is imperitive that the cutter be centered in the guide.
I would buy a Universal base plate that takes Porter Cable style guide bushes and a set of those bushes,

Do you need a 30mm GB, as these may be hard to find.(the PC style do not come in metric as far as I am aware.).

Hi JW

Thank you for your reply. Yes, I will be needing a 30mm guide bush. Whilst the spring loaded mechanism on my model offers quick an easy attachment and removal, it does not involve any screws which would have ensured a more secure hold.

It appears I may well need a universal base plate and guide bushes which can be screwed down to it.

Thank you for the above link Semipro. I am tempted to purchase this type that accepts pc type bushes but am concerned I may end up being back at square one if the centre hole is even marginally bigger than the guides used. Do the guide bushes move even slightly?

The alternative that I'm looking at would be something like this that uses screws to fix the guide bushes:

Amazon.co.uk

It would mean that I'd be locked into their guide bushes but I'm wondering if this option would be the best to eliminate any guide bush play for my intended purpose.

As always, any advice given is appreciated.

On re-reading your post, I see that you are using a Trend jig, so the 30mm guide is important.
See if you can find a replacement base, as I doubt if PC style bushing will have 30mm as they are imperial sizes.
See if you can find 30mm guide bushings from another source...

For your information, if what is meant by PC style bushings, the ones you screw tight from the back using a ring type nut, then metric sizes are available in the UK now:

Amazon.co.uk

Would you be able to tell me if these type move slightly? For future reference. Or am I worrying too much..

In any case, I'm leaning towards the base plate I linked in previous post.

Thanks

James, the 2301 has a different template guide system. There is a locking mechanism, with a release tab on the outer edge of the base, and some plastic teeth, which lock the template guide in place. It has two screw holes like yours, but these are for the chip guard and dust extractor. The template guide is an optional extra, so I cannot try it in mine to see if the play is generic, or specific to Dink’s setup. But there is no way to adjust the centricity of the template guide, so a separate base would be the way to go.
BTW, what this model does have which the 3216 did not, is: through the base height adjustment; LED lights (but only come on when the motor is switched on - Harrysin’s pet peeve); a linear bearing on one column - makes for a very smooth plunge. Mine came with a micro-adjustable straight guide. Have not done much with it yet - no time.
