Heh...I remember the kitchen carpeting rage in the 70's. Kitchen designers were falling all over themselves recommending the product to the gullible public; what a disaster.
Same for bathroom carpeting, only way more disgusting outcomes.
There IS no one-best-flooring. There ARE flooring solutions which best answer specific conditions.
Hardwood flooring ANYWHERE there's moisture is just a really bad idea. Having said that, Teak decks on yachts work well, but they're not low maintenance.
Personally, I like porcelain ceramic tile and Berber carpeting, and hardwood floors long as there's no moisture in the area.
Obviously the carpets's not going to work in a shopping mall or a car showroom.
