flush trim templates

Hello -

I work in a college shop, and we just recently purchased a set of templates used for top flush trimming. I was wondering how they worked. Specifically, how much space there should be between the bit and the template. It seems the bits we have are either quite snug in the template or have way too much space. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Hi: Are you asking about a template, or bushings that mount in the router base plate for routing around a pattern? Woodnut65

Sorry, I guess I'm talking about bushings. They mount in the router base plate when you're going around a pattern. :)
Hi: As a rule the bit should be min. 1/8" smaller than the inside dim. of the bushing. That allows 1/16th" for the chips to be removed as the router does its job. The bushings can be used either hand held in the route, or mounted in a table. If you had a template and fastened material to it you could run the router around it with the bushing mounted and get an exact duplicate of the pattern your using. But depending on the bit size and bushing size the duplicate would be larger than the pattern.
The difference can be determined by a formular, the size of the bushing outside dim.
minus the bit size divided by 2. hope this helps... Woodnut65
that helps a lot. thank you! :)
