I got my 788 for $50.00 that had been in storage for 20 years. Less than $75 in new parts and new grease in the bearings, I consider it now in "like new" condition. So, in my opinion, for the hobbyist, there are some great deals out there on the local social media selling places.

I looked for over a year and was going to "settle" for the generic entry level model just to get back into the craft. (I had an old C-man 30 years ago). With all the hoop-la about the 788, I set my sights on that one and nothing else was on the table. The prices were just out of my current budget for a new one so I started an active search in the used market. A year later, I found the $50.00 one and was quite surprised it only needed a few new parts.
I just saw this one for $100.00 and if I had my shop again, I would snatch it up, refurbish it and sell it for $300.00. (which is still in my thought process for this one).
Pay attention to the model number: Type 1 was made in Canada and Type 2 was made in Asia and is a bit lesser quality in some of the parts. With a quick look on my local FaceBook MarketPlace.
Good luck in your quest and let us know what you decide to do.
