I'm new here and maybe this has been addressed already. I'm getting ready to build a series of plantation shutters for my house. I think I want to use poplar, but I'm open to suggenstions. On the design side, I want to put a bead on the vertical stiles and am unsure if I should use a v-bit for the groove or is there a bit that will do a better bead for me? Any suggestions appreciated. .... John

Depends on if they are inside or out. Popular does not stand up well to the elements. As far as a beading bit goes, look at MLCS they sell various size ones but t6he shipping to Canada might be expensive. To the US it's free.

Thanks, Andy and Art for your responses. These will be inside shutters, so weather isn't an issue. The only reason I am considering poplar is that I thought it might be more stable and less prone to warping than soft woods. However, if I could get away with hemlock, fir or another common softwood, that would be substantially less expensive. These will be finished using a latex semi-gloss white paint. Art, I looked at MLCS. They have a beading bit that should do the trick. Thanks for the tip

Poplar would be my choice. It depends on your sourcing though. I get S3S poplar for about $2.50 board ft. It has less knots than the pine at that price.
