Welcome aboard. The wood shop can be a daunting place but once you get started and have good references it becomes easier. I find it relaxing for the most part. Expect challenges and some failures but also expect to make your projects your own. By that I mean that plans are simply a path to a result and deviating from the plan to make it yours is always a choice. I can think of few plans I followed completely. I would say the most important to the learning curve is understanding the dangers of any tool you use. There are many videos and online manual available to help guide you through and the forum is another invaluable source as well. Make good use of it when you can.

I am retired, and my main interests are Dodge trucks, and metal working. I inherated a lot of wood working tools from my Father, and looking to learn the secrets of wood working. Unfortunatly I never got along with my father until his last two years.Too late to learn from him. The wood side of my shop now has two table saws, a band saw, wood lathe, and drill press, All older craftsman. to list off the major items, Several were from my Grandfathers collection. I have done a good bit of lurking, looking forward to more reading.

My mother buried 3 husbands. The last, my step father Jim Barnes was a retired union carpenter in St Louis. Hard man to figure out. Once he got in his 80's he really mellowed out and took his guard down.. Very enjoyable at this time in his life and had many stories to tell working on sky scrappers and dams...

He said he worked a short bit on the St. LOUIS ARC...

I would not say I am a total newbie, but Most of what I have done with wood, was more utility, in that I made a shelf to be a shelf. I'm looking to more more with the wood, maybe even incorporate the metal and wood sides of my shop more. Initially wanting to make boxes that are more then just boxes for my good tools. I am still getting things together & organized. Maybe more as time goes on.
