Hi Everybody,

Bruce here - I'm in the process of stepping beyond 2x4 and deck screw construction and I'm looking for a place to bounce ideas off people as I progress.

WELCOME BRUCE!!!...

Welcome aboard. I'm a tad east of Raleigh.
We're ready for ya. I know making that transition was a bit overwhelming. Did carpentry level DIY stuff all my life (grew up repairing a 1913 farm house), but woodworking is much more fussy and soooooo much to learn.

I've attached a pdf of the 18 things (more really) that helped me accelerate my learning curve. Hopefully it will help you steer clear of some frustrating and expensive mis-steps. It's kind of long overall, but pretty concise and to the point. It has been updated from time to time as I learn yet another lesson.

G'day Bruce, welcome to the forum.

I leave questions to others, as they have mor knowledge and experience in all things wooden....
Welcome!

I spent about a year using construction grade materials to get started in woodworking - pine can be frustrating to work with but getting any good with it is a good start before using hardwoods. Find a sawyer in your area to buy wood from as retail outlets are pricey. Craigslist is a good place to find them - I have 5 different resources to draw from.
Welcome Bruce. I'm kind-of over near Charlotte. Are you a member of NCWW?

Welcome to the forum Bruce.
Welcome to the forum Bruce.
Welcome aboard Bruce. Just to the north of you in Central Virginia. Should have some good wood mills to buy from locally but not sure how close. Some even have cut offs they'll let you have for practice if you get familiar with them. You have found a good source of wood working information so ask away and post plenty of pictures. What are you're key interests in woodworking or are you just mainly exploring at this point?
One liners

You know Stick. Back when I was in the Army, my guys called me the King of the one liners, but
you beat me on a daily basis with one or two words.

Hi Everyone - Thanks for the warm welcome!
@DesertRatTom - nice doc! I did a quick run-through and recognized a few items right away!
@CharleyL - not yet, but looking into them
@sreilly - mainly interested in building things I need. Currently working on a wall mounted book shelf for my daughter's room and a very basic router table. Just think, it was only a little jig I made to hold PVC pipe steady for drilling that got all this started!
