Help with sign making

Hi
Just joined and hope someone can help. I am completely new to Routers and picked an old Craftsman (I believe it is 315.17432) that came with with a sign making template system (970747) and looks very similar to the Milescraft 1212, hoping to make a sign for our grandson. I set it up based on the instructions using a router bushing template with a straight bit set to approx 11/16 below router base and set up the sign template. I had difficulty seeing the bit on the sign which was clamped to a workmate. I started the router and then placed the router in letter template- it is impossible to see where the bit is in relation to template once the router is on the rails and of course it got destroyed.
Any suggestions or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Hello Ken, welcome to the forums...
We're happy you found us...

Here is some recommended ''light reading'' of pertinent/relative information on routering that we've put together at this here link for ya...
You should find most everything there (at least most of it) quite useful and a lot of help to get you up and running in the world of routers...
Enjoy...
Do take some time to read the safety PDF's... PLEASE!!!
Blood and trips to the ER, we find, are very annoying... Not to mention – expensive...

You have question about something??? Anything???
We welcome all questions here on most any subject you can come up w/....
Not only that, we love and excel at spending money... Lots and lots of money... Especially when it's yours....

2nd...
11/16'' is way too deep of a cut in one pass...
the bushing is to guide the router around the template..
practice moving the router around on the template w/ the bushing installed and w/o the bit...
what you are doing is more about feel than it is sight...
(I sure hope you are moving the router in the correct directions)...

Thoid..
what got destroyed...
