Welcome to the forums. If you live in MI or are close to Detroit please post in this thread. Local forum members get together as a group and make sawdust, visit woodworking shows, you name it.

I am a little over an hour North in the town of Swartz Creek (between Flint and Lansing). I am just learning a bit about woodworking as a hobby. My main interests are in making jigs and wooden machines. I am just completing a "Copycarver" and a "pantograph with router".
Neither of those machines are my design, however I am in the process of designing a jig to duplicate, and design, 'tone boards' for duck calls.
I also have a prototype for a jig to make 'dishing hammers' for people who make medieval armor.

Im about 10 miles from the winfield collection but I actually dont end up going there very much. They have a cool little show room, but unless the trip saves you more in shipping than it costs in gas, I dunno how much of an event it is.

Edit: They do usually let you pick through their extra plans pile at checkout though, so if you find something useful in there it has some added value.

Ray, you will find that when we do things as a group it is a lot more fun. I imagine there would be more interest in a trip to Raven Farm to buy wood for good prices. With a small group it is easy to reach the 100 board foot minimum purchase.

Hi Mike, I might be interested in such a trip. It's about a 3 1/2 hour drive, but sounds like fun. And I do need a bit of red oak. Their web site says $100 minimum by the way. Either with a group its no problem. I would probably get at least 100 bf myself! I can go about any day except Sundays or July 28th!

Living Near Detroit - on the Boarder

I'm you Stand at the North end of Belle Isle and look across the river I'm a couple of blocks in from the river, so it takes me about 35 Minutes from my driveway to Rockler Tools on Woodward or 45 min to Woodcraft on Vandyke ( assuming the tunnels not back up ). I'm usually in Detroit area once a week for fuel and that way have the advantage of equipment and material in Michigan or the great spots in Windsor like Miller's Mill works. I'm always game for new places, ideas and friends. I need to get out of my basement ( workshop ) once in a while or as my kids would say "don't turn into a troll" right after they asked for a new desk, entertainment unit, baby gate or fix this / that etc. etc.

Back and forth Windsor / Detroit

Hi BiranS

I recently started here when I was looking for solutions for a new router I bought but was having problems with the plunge base. In that I'm back and forth across the river a lot it’s kind’a neat to realize there are others doing the same. I solved the plunge router base issue by throwing the base in my back room junk pile and buying a second fixed base and basically giving up on plunge routing – I use my router table all the time and don’t really need the plunge feature much anyway. I’ve been working on an entertainment / shelving unit for my daughter and son-in-law for the past couple of months and pushing it to be done by the end of Aug or mid Sep so it keeps me busy.

Richard, dig that plunge base out of the back room and we will help you with it. Send me an Email with your phone mumber and maybe I can talk you through it.

Thanks for the offer Router Roman. I generally just come up with something I need to make (or want to make) and then try to think of a wooded machine that would make the process easier. I have found many wooden machines on Youtube but anything useful and interesting (except those with a lot of gears, I don't have gears figured out yet).
Perhaps we will cross paths and talk about it at a get together.

Hi I'm Barb, and from the Keego area. I've been in woodworking since probably 1998 I think, trying my hand at carving with a rotary tool, then to scroll sawing, and last year made the leap to routing.

Living in an apartment, makes it difficult to do any of my woodworking, so this past Spring, we found an old 78 Winnebago that was completely gutted out and made it into a workshop for me. My husband installed two wall particians in the back for a "store room", and built all the tables I needed for most of my projects. The prior owner also removed all the electric that was in it, so we also had to install electrical outlets. "Beastie" as I fondly call my rolling workshop is currently not running (long story, and no help to get him up and going) I still go over there, turn on the generator, and I'm off n' running to do whatever project I have.

Glad you could join us Barb and with luck we will get both of you making sawdust with us.

Hi all,

I'm in South Lyon, so not far from Detroit, and am brand new to the forum, and pretty much to woodworking as a whole. My wife and I bought a foreclosure two years ago which was basically an advertisement for why some people should not be allowed near power tools, and while we've finally gotten a good portion of it redone, there's still a lot to do.

I let professionals handle the initial pass on things, as there was just too much to do and a lot of it was well beyond my capacities (complete rewiring & replumbing job, lots of floor replacement, etc.) but it's now at the point that I can handle most of what's left.

When I was young I helped my father do things like put in a bathroom, and addition on our cottage, etc., but never got to learn from him about building cabinets or anything like that.

I've just purchased my first router (a Bosch 1617EVS) and table, and I've got a long list of projects I need to start slowly whacking at, so I'm looking forward to exploring what's here, and learning from others.
