Incidental pattern

I almost always try to make a pattern from a model I make regardless of its intended origin. In this case, I participated in a weekly modeling contest. Great way to learn new techniques and to keep skills up. The contest theme was "time piece". This was my entry.

And here is the pattern from it.

Hopefully, someone finds it useful.

The theme for this weeks' competition was "under the sea". My submission was "Looking up to the sky" and of course had to try to get a pattern out of it. :)

This is the pattern I made from the fish model I used for the video. Took about 10 minutes to make so not a great but still proud on how quick I was able to make it.

Hopefully of use to someone. It actually doesn't look bad as a model. Made this from the height map to show what you can get from the image. This is still virtual with a wood texture applied but you can see the detail. I did clean the fins a bit to lower the texture.

Oscar, I did notice on the timepiece model that the minute hand is on 12 but the hour hand is in between 4 and 5. But the model is a good-looking model.

Yup. I missed it even though I've looked at it a hundred times.

I didn't notice it until I returned to this post several times. I even imported it into Aspire and thought something looks funny but did not see it at that time.
Regardless of hand positions, this is a beautiful piece of work! If you remake it, please post that too. This would make a wonderful retirement plaque for a railroader.

I was asked to show how I make my height maps on another site so made a chain bed as an example. I've also been playing around trying to figure out the fastest way to make these. I have it under 3 minutes but I know it can be done way faster. It is tileable.

Here is a blender screen shot to show the setup.

P.S. I used a different method to render the height map image. That's why its a bit darker than my normal method. For the 3d folks, this utilizes a material that pulls the z-height data and mixes it with a bit of ambient occlusion. Its a cheat for mostly works. As I mentioned on the other site, not all models are good candidates for this type of rendering.

Made an animation for my wife's Twitch account of a dancing teddy bear. Of course had to try to make a pattern from the model. It came out kind of mediocre but it might still be of use to someone with a small one.

Damascus steel background texture.

I am playing around and trying to get a good variety of damascus steel patterns. This is my starting base. I think its looks a little like damascus Thor pattern.

This is what it looks like converting the height map to geometry.

For any Blender users, here is the node group I used to get the above material. The normals and displacement maps are not totally required. I created them using Shadermap 4 Pro from the material.

That would make an interesting background for a sign.

Good. It can be used as a background or as a texture depending on your need and cnc software.
