What qualifies as an antique? I built this when my daughter was born... in 1988. It was used to store diapers and other baby stuff. I didn't even put a back on it because I didn't have anything to use. She still has it today. Original Fruitwood finish with Deft Clear wood finish. :)

Not sure about antique, but sure to be an heirloom.

I wouldn't call it an antique, Mike. To me it would be something from before I was born, well before really. Something from the 30's or older, preferably 20's and older.

Edit - hit 'Post reply' too soon. Nice looking shelf that I'm sure will be held onto for years and years!

According to Miriam Webster, Noun, a work of art, piece of furniture, or decorative object made at an earlier period and according to various customs laws at least 100 years ago. A doctor I knew had, over many years, filled his home with antiques. He explained that he liked having furniture that grew in value as it got older. Nothing refinished, which reduces value. It felt like living in a museum. I think your piece is a classic design. To become an antique in the future it would likely need to have a back made of glued up, half inch lumber. Preferably using hide, or brown glue. Nice to see when old projects are prized.
