Perhaps this will help. I use the MLCS 20amp version speed control with a Hitachi ½" Electric Plunge Router Type TR-12. With several of the controllers, after a number of uses they stopped working; the router wouldn't even start with the speed control connected. An electronics store analyzed the electronics and suggested replacing the TRIAC with a 40 amp version (TRIAC NTE 56031 from Arrow Electronics). After doing that they have worked fine now for over a year.

PS: TRIAC (Triode for AC) is a semiconductor device that is commonly used in power regulation and switching applications. It is used in switching, brilliance control in lights, speed control in fans and motors, etc.
