Did you get the instruction book with it? Check that. You also need to use an engineer's square to make certain the fingers are perpendicular to the frame. The backer board are sacrificial and can be replaced frequently.

Are you using the individual fingers, or one of the standard ones?

You might try to find a nearby woodworking supply store (Rockler, Woodcraft, etc.) to see if they have some smaller pieces on hand that are the right thickness.
