Making a puzzle of the US States

1417 Views 9 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  Cherryville Chuck
I am building my first CNC Router/engraver, the MPCNC. I'm looking for projects to make with it.

My daughter-in-law is an elementary teacher. I would like to make her a puzzle of the US with the individual states as pieces.

Anyone know of a source of drawings/plans of the outline of individual states that can be cut out on a cnc router, and reasonably align with each other? Or a drawing of the US that I could manipulate to make the individual states? Or using freeware how to make such a puzzle?

Thanks for any input.

I think I found what I need. Just had to find the right Google search terms. I searched for .dxf files of the US States and found several links to explore...

Cool Chuck, if you'd like to search for more search w/ the .EPS or .PDF extensions also.
You may get more results. Also search for coloring books or clipart under Images > Tools tab.
The search can get a bit hairy at times.
So use a 1/16th inch end mill and cut the map out of 1/4 inch mdf or plywood. Or 1/8th inch baltic birch. You could always create a border or a recessed area of the entire map on a separate board so the pieces would fit.
That would make assembling the puzzle too easy, Mike. The kids would just visually scan the board for a similar shape; no need to even look at the context.
*resisting temptation to make political comment...* :)
Interesting thought Dan. Make all the pieces square and exactly the same size and see if they know where they should go. Hmmm.

You gotta remember Dan, there's 48 pieces in the main body. Not just the 6 or so you guys got.
Heh, heh, several states might get hid under the Texas piece!:surprise:>:)

Texas= 695, 662 square kilometers

British Columbia= 944,735 square kilometers

Just sayin.
