Finally got my Miter Trimmer set up today. With some leftovers I made a small picture frame. I wouldn't call the 45's perfect. I put that on me but after a little practice I might get a perfect 10 now and then.

Between cutting and gluing the time was cut in half while the aggravation dropped by 90 percent. Overall the quality is an improvement that exceed's my expectations of a 45 degree miter joint. Plus it can be achieved a lot easier than before.

I went with the Miter Trimmer for its simplicity. I didn't consider a shooting board because of me. I would have messed up something up trying to keep a good edge on a good plane that was on a good shop built jig. I did consider Incra's Miter sled but wasn't familiar enough with it and didn't get enough feed back on it.

Stick agreed on the ol' Pootatuck Lion Miter trimmer. I just wished that someone would make quality replacement blades for the beast! Heard that these "quality import" blades are not the best.
hard to beat that old US-made iron!!!

Some how-to-use-it info on the Lion:

Thought the tip of using the head from an adjustable square for certain 45 degree cuts was interesting.

Stick: do you have a jig to hold the trimmer blades or do you hand-hold them?

I ask as there are times that my hands do not work well. I sharpen chisels and plane irons utilizng water stones with the aid of jig so I do not then need to hand-hold them. Sometimes anything that I need to hand-hold at a constant angle or repetitiously hold is a PITA.

For blades as large as that many of us are using sandpapers to sharpen. Lee Valley has an assortment specially for this and I found some carbide paper that comes in 2500 and 3000 grit from Heletia that works fairly well (and very cheap). I`ve mostly been using it for flattening the back sides of blades so far and the 2500 I have really starts to make a difference in sharpness as the back side of the blade gets shiny looking. Derek Willis posted a jig for sharpening planer and jointer blades a long time ago that he claimed worked very well and would make it easier on your hands.

http://www.routerforums.com/tools-woodworking/27504-best-bench-top-thickness-planer-2.html It should be adaptable in design for these blades.

Stick: way long ago, I bought one of the original (?) very or earlier Tormek green machines. Thought it would be better, faster, and easier than the Japanese water stones. As it turned out, for some reason I just never could get it to sharpen as well as the water stone method. Packed it up and have not looked at but once or twice in the last 15+ years.

What jig number/identifier is it that you utilize to sharpen the miter trimmer blades? It might fit the earlier machine that I have. But knowing my luck and the age of my tools, nothing is compatible….
