This is a bit of a teaser, because,so far, I'm not sure if any members here are at a level to be able to build something like this. I really don't want to come across as an elitist, but a lot of the responses seem to say "Oh, I could never do that." Still, I hope I am encouraging & not discouraging any one to aspire to a higher level of skill then then they have now. Lets face it, I am 75 now & have spent the greater part of my working life in cabinet shops & building furniture. I am bound to have picked up some skills that I would be glad to pass on to others.
Some of you have said or implied that you wish you could build furniture but you don't have enough tools or ........ Take a look at Youtube videos on green wood furniture making. It doesn't require a large tool investment. The price of wood can be as low as free. You don't need a designated shop. People will pay you for what you can make. Think about it

As I said in my title, these 2 chairs are the first that I made. But, I did start out with a lot of acquired skills and I had the chair I was copying right in front of me. When I delivered those 2 chairs, the husband wasn't home. When he did come in, the chairs were sitting around the table with the originals. He looked around a bit & then asked'which ones are the new ones.

Nice chairs. I would say a lot of the members here could build something like that. I could. But things like that are things I do not care to make, so I don't. I get a lot of that, "I can't do that". I think at least part of them could, if they would try, but they don't try.

Don't know as I recall anyone saying not enough tools. I don't have heaps of tools, but that wouldn't stop me from making something (unless it was really huge). I find youtube packed with a lot more talentless videos than talented, so I only watch youtube for entertainment, not education.

To be totally honest I think most of these guys can do most anything given the information. I have no doubt I could as well. Having said that having a chair in font of me and being told I need to reproduce it would be daunting as I have no idea where to start. Given plans and a well thought out approach I'm confident we could make these and more. Often times it's more a question of instruction than it is of ability. Just saying.

And yes, those chairs look fantastic. You truly have the skill and knowledge.

Didn't I see benches yesterday of similar style. The only chairs I have built were Adirondack chairs because I like the look and I enjoy making outdoor stuff also. After completion, I gave them away !!! they were the most uncomfortable hard to exit things I could ever imagine LOL. There is a fellow not far from me who builds Windsor chairs and he invited me to spend some time to learn the process. One day I will take him up on his offer.

Dan, I haven't built a Windsor, but they are a fascinating build. I haven't figures out which of our local hardwoods would be a good choice for building one would be. That would be another whole different skill set for me. Hmmm? Paul

When people tell me "I could never make something like that" my comment is " How many times have you tried? You don't know if you can make one or not until you at least try once".

I was raised with that thought and have never found anything I could not do. I'm not saying that everything I do is perfect but I have found that I can do anything I have tried at least to an acceptable degree.

Also when people say "I can't do it because I can't afford all the tools needed", just remember modern tools are just replacements for tools used by true craftsmen many many years ago. There are many ways to accomplish a task and everyone will do it with the tools they are most familiar with.

I had a furniture restoration business in the mid 80's and early 90's and we built not only chairs but a ton of chair replacement parts. It is sometimes a bit of a challenge but certainly doable.

Here are some photo posting tips if you’re using your phone or iPad – the best way for proper orientation is to shoot landscape (widescreen). Rotate your phone or iPad CCW for proper orientation. If you want your photos to be portrait then open the photo in a viewer on your computer, rotate it to the orientation you want, then save it in that orientation. It will be correct when you upload it to the servers here. If you’re shooting video please shoot widescreen like our monitors, not portrait.

The best way to post photos in line with your text is to use Go Advanced below the Quick Reply window. If you’re starting a new thread then you’re automatically in the Advanced editor. Click on the Paper Clip on the ribbon bar and that will bring up a dialogue box where you can browse to your photos. Upload them and then put your cursor where you want a photo, hit the dropdown beside the Paper Clip, and choose the photo you want inserted. If you have several photos and just want them at the end of your text then put your cursor at the end and hit the Insert All on the dropdown list of photos.
