New flute totem design

Making a couple more flutes since my last one wasn't great. Still trying to refine my flute making process.

So wanted a new totem design for them.

Not really traditional but I like dragons so made a dragon totem. I'll throw it into the cnc tomorrow and see how it does.

Modeled in ZBrush and Blender.

Texture added for fun.

What the pattern looks like in my cnc software. Detail lost due to size. Carving at 3.25" x 1.8" x .25".

Me too. First carve was too thin. Head and part of the wing snapped off.

Went back to the drawing board and made the pattern thicker. I then efficiently loaded the original file again and carved the first bad one a second time. I was so confident I threw in some purple heart without doing a test carve for all of these. Really pretty fire wood.

Attempt number 3 is now carving. I am carving four at a time and so far its been biting me in the butt. Hopefully 3 is the magic number.

The flutes came out looking pretty sharp though. My last one I made I believe is my prettiest one so far.
Changed the depth to .35" and perfect. Really happy with outcome.

It is such a blast to be able to envision something in your head and be able to design and carve it yourself. That is also true with all the woodworking and other crafts highlighted on here.

I still need to tune the flutes.

Started assembling the first flute. Still needs a little bit of leather work but overall complete. A new totem design block. Give it a bit more interesting look. Used eastern cedar, maple, purpleheart, western cedar.

F# - ish.

Still have to do a little bit of leatherwork but here are the three flutes from this series. Pretty happy with them overall. One has a hole somewhere I have to find and fill but a simple fix. Otherwise they all play reasonably well. I am still not very good at tuning them.

I really like the totem. So along with the eagle one of my favorites.

The block with the holes was a nice experiment but I don't like it. It is really hard to tighten it down to the flute. So won't be doing that again.

That would have been an awesome back story to the stones but unfortunately no. I wanted to do something that would differentiate my flutes so I've been adding sea sediment jasper stones to all my flutes.
